Fun Family Vacations Without The Distractions

by The Shopping Duck on February 9, 2010

In the simpler days, vacations were a way to spend a relaxing time with the family. Today, there are a lot of technological distractions. We have kids that love to text, play video games and watch television. As adults, we are distracted but what needs to still be completed at work! TwitterMoms and Alamo are asking moms to share their tips for distraction-free vacations and since I am planning a vacation right now, I thought I would share my tips.

  • Plan out your day. Include time for the kids to do what they want (and that could include video games or television).
  • Limit texting. When we are spending time as a family, the cell phones must be put away. Allow a limited time for teens to text their friends.
  • Get the kids involved. Let everyone in the family help decide on activities and free time schedules.
  • Let Mom or Dad work. Sometimes work just won’t leave you alone. Let work know what times you will be available and try and stick to that schedule. Otherwise, be prepared for constant interruptions.
  • Bring a backpack for each child for car and plane trips. Include fun activities, books, etc. that can be enjoyed on long, boring trips.
  • Take memories. Be sure to bring a camera or camcorder and either let the kids take some pictures or purchase them disposable cameras. Kids are more likely to be into the activity if they see it in a new perspective.
  • Snacks. Always have a few snacks on hand. There is nothing more distracting than a hungry child.
  • Water. My son is constantly thirsty. I always pack my backpack with water and juice boxes to avoid stopping for drinks all the time.
  • If you are driving, get a good map. Find a detailed map of the area, or bring a navigation system. There is nothing worse than being lost half of the vacation!
  • Have fun. Don’t let tired or moody children (or parents) get in your way of having fun. Take a deep breath and move on!

Good tips–I agree, there is nothing worse than a hungry child except for a sleepy child!
