I was privileged to be able to watch a sneak preview of the new movie Mighty Fine which will be released to theaters on May 25th. It will only be showing in select theaters, you can check to see if there is a theater near you here.

The movie stars Chazz Palminteri, Andie McDowell, Jodelle Ferland and Rainey Qualley. While the story is fictional, it draws on writer/director Debbie Goodstein’s memories of her own childhood. She recalls that her father had anger issues and although he loved his family he exhibited self-destructive impulses and rages. The story revolves around Joe Fine, father to Maddie, a 16 year old trying to spread her wings and Natalie, a somewhat introverted young teen. The mother, Stella, is a holocaust survivor and the peacemaker of the family. The story is introduced in voice-over by the grown up Natalie played by Janeane Garofolo.

In the beginning of the film, the family is moving from New York City to Louisiana and everything seems to be great! The father lavishes gifts on his family and buys them a brand new house. However, the viewer realizes that some of the comments made by the Maddie and Natalie just don’t add up. They are hoping for a big change – not just a change of scenery. Unfortunately, Joe Fine’s business is failing and he the anger issues that were present before the move start to manifest again. While Stella tries to keep peace, the daughter’s each handle their father’s anger in their own way. I don’t want to give too much detail about the film, but the ending is very optimistic.

If you have ever dealt with someone who has anger or other mental health issues, than you will find this film very real. In fact, I found that it was difficult at times to watch, however, the film brings emphasizes that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Enjoy this clip from the movie:

One of the ways that I will be using Skype in the future is to talk to my daughter who is going far away for college. Skype makes it possible to not only hear my daughter’s voice, but see her as well!

A little background. My nephew flew into town to celebrate his sister’s birthday. He told his bride-to-be that he was going to the zoo all day. The bride actually works at Disney, so when her sister invited her to go for the day she had no clue that there was a big surprise in store!

If you haven’t see Marvel’s The Avengers yet, it is the must see film of the season. My favorite character is the Incredible Hulk. I absolutely love Mark Ruffalo and think he did a great job with the role. He reminded me of Bill Bixby who played the role of Bruce Banner on the television shows years ago. Anyway, the movie broke box office history in its first weekend making $207.4 million during its 3-day opening in the United States.

This movie is definitely worth seeing a second time! The story line was well developed and I loved the bits of comedy woven into the story. Also, the music in the film is great. “Live to Rise,” the original song written for and appearing in the film is the first single from the Marvel Music/Hollywood Records release Avengers Assemble.
