With all the problems with lead in toys and loose magnets, here is a site where you can check for toy recalls. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission lists all toys that have been recalled since 1975. The most recent recalls include AquaDots - it can cause kids to become unconscious after swallowing, and, Curious George Plush dolls by Marvel which may contain lead.
The best advice is still to not let your children put anything in their mouths and to be particularly careful with small items.
